Plasma Cannons automatically fire every 22 seconds (both while being held and while on the ground).
Interval can be changed to anywhere between 3 and 60 seconds (22 by default).
I tried taking a long time in Ice Caves and it didn't crash, there's just lots of shots bouncing back and forth between the lasers.
